The book examÂines the phenomenon of disenÂfranÂchiseÂment through the lens of history, race, law, and the demoÂcratic process. Author Gilda R. Daniels, who served as a deputy chief in the Justice DepartÂment’s Civil Rights DiviÂsion and has more than two decades of voting rights experÂiÂence, argues that voter suppresÂsion works in cycles, constantly adaptÂing and findÂing new ways to hinder access for an expoÂnenÂtially growÂing minorÂity popuÂlaÂtion. She warns that a premedÂitÂated strategy of restrictÂive laws and deceptÂive pracÂtices has taken root and is erodÂing the very basis of AmerÂican demoÂcracy ? the right to vote.
Join Daniels and Wendy Weiser, vice presÂidÂent of the BrenÂnan Center’s DemoÂcracy Program, to discuss the book and the voter suppresÂsion crisis.
