This year lecture "The Court of Justice of the European Union and the Contemporary Challenges to European Integration - Rule of Law, New Technologies and More" will be presented by Professor , First Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

The lecture will take the format of a Fireside Chat between First Advocate General  and co-directors of The Jean Monnet Center Professors and J.H.H. Weiler.

About this year lecture:

Troubled times pose new challenges for European integration. Some of these challenges are reflected in the jurisprudence of the CJEU. At the forefront are decisions concerning the limits of the principle of primacy of Union law, especially in the context of respect for national identity, recently re-contextualised in particular for the purpose of the debate on the rule of law and on the independence of judiciary.

In addition to these longstanding challenges, the EU must also grapple with the impact of new technologies, particularly in the areas of privacy and online platforms. The CJEU's rulings on data retention of electronic communication and the functioning of online platforms are of fundamental importance for European integration in the digital age.

Is the way the EU is responding to the judiciary challenges appropriate from a global perspective?
