The Veto: Film Screening and Discussion

Law Students for Human Rights will host a screening of The Veto, a documentary short film that highlights the controversial use of theÌýUN Security Council Permanent 5'sÌýveto power. The film discusses the history of theÌýveto, submitting that it has been abused to obstruct multilateral cooperation with regards to the international crimes of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The film proposesÌýa solution forÌýrestoring the Security Council's agency to prevent and stop the most serious international crimes:Ìýhaving the UN General Assembly request an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice on whether there are legal limits to the veto in the face of atrocity crimes. After the film, there will be a discussion and Q&A with:
