On May 27, University Professor delivered the H.L.A. Hart Memorial Lecture at the University of Oxford on the topic “Distributive Justice, the Basic Structure, and the Place of Private Law.”

Given annually, the prestigious lecture is named for Professor of Jurisprudence H.L.A. Hart (1907-1992), who wrote the highly influential book The Concept of Law, which expanded on his theory of legal positivism.

Previous speakers have included , Frank Henry Sommer Professor of Law; , Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law; , Bonnie and Richard Reiss Professor of Constitutional Law; and , Professor of Philosophy and Law Emeritus.

Scheffler’s lecture will be published in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies.
