This training is intended to demystify the asylum process for attorneys of all levels of immigration experience.
It will cover:
-Brief overview of the elements of a successful asylum claim;
-The affirmative versus defensive asylum process;
-How affirmative asylum decisions are made by local Asylum Offices;
-and Best practices for I-589 and interview preparation, from the perspective of a former asylum officer.
Presenter Bio:
Kristin Pezzuti was an Asylum Officer at the New York Asylum Office from December 2017-April 2019, where she adjudicated over 350 affirmative asylum cases. She is a longtime volunteer at New Sanctuary Coalition and a 2013 graduate of Hofstra Law School. She is currently a Staff Attorney at Safe Passage Project where she represents young people in their removal proceedings.
