Transforming NYCHA: Federal Funding, Oversight, and the Blueprint for Change

Date: Thursday, December 9, 2021
Time: 9:30 - 11:00 AM ET

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) faces both immense challenges and historic opportunities. Long-term disinvestment at all levels of government, combined with declining operational and management capacity has contributed to dangerous conditions in many of NYCHA’s aging buildings, culminating in expanded judicial and federal oversight. Along with increased oversight, local resources, private investment, and innovative leadership have laid the foundation for a potential turnaround.

Currently, significant federal funds for public housing capital needs are on the table in Washington, while the fate of NYCHA’s ambitious “Blueprint for Change” remains uncertain in Albany. Join the Furman Center for a discussion of NYCHA’s recent history and future at this pivotal moment for the City's bulwark of affordability and neighborhood diversity.

Panelists will include:

  • Brian Benjamin, Lieutenant Governor, New York State
  • Walter McNeil, President, Edenwald Houses Tenants Association
  • Damaris Reyes, Executive Director, Good Old Lower East Side
  • Gregory Russ, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, New York City Housing Authority
  • Daniel W. Sherrod, Director of Federal Monitorships, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Moderated by: Katherine O'Regan, Faculty Director, Furman Center
