The International Court of Justice's University Traineeship program is intended to give recent law graduates experience working as a clerk at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The program is highly selective and is awarded to a few of the most outstanding legal scholars worldwide. Candidates are nominated by ÈâÂþÎÝ in February of each year and are selected by the Court on a competitive basis.
If selected by the Court, the clerk is assigned to work for one Judge for the duration of ten months, September 1st to June 30th the following year. During this period, participants can expect to attend the Court’s public hearings, to research and write memoranda to the Judge on legal questions or factual aspects of pending cases, and to have involvement in the work of the Court.
ÈâÂþÎÝ Law was the first American law school to initiate a clerkship program in 2000. Each year, ÈâÂþÎÝ Law nominates current students or alumni based on their applications to receive the professional honor. ICJ has selected an ÈâÂþÎÝ Law clerk each year.
